Two Forms of Singing Styles: “Bel canto” and “POP”
Singing is a form of expression that can be performed in different ways and by singers for various occasions. Two of the most well-known styles are classical or operatic singing, known as, “bel canto”, and “popular singing (pop)”. Both styles have their unique features, and there are three differences between them, such as resonance, tone color, and applied fields. First and Foremost, one of the main differences is how they handle resonance. In operatic singing, resonance is crucial to producing a rich and powerful sound. In the Middle Ages, singers who sang in churches or religious sites needed to amplify their voices to convey their music to a farther distance. Additionally, the music was considered divine, so performers had to sing very gorgeously without despising the gods. To show their respect, singers developed techniques to control their breathing and support their voice, resulting in vibrant sound with lively tones. In contrast, pop singers focus on lifting the soft palate so that the voice resonates correctly through the nasal cavity, and oral cavity, producing a shrill sound with tongue tip or blade. Unlike classical singers who emphasize the amplification of the sound, pop singers only worry about beautifying the voice. Another difference is how they cope with tone color. Classical singers often strive for a pure and consistent tone color with minimal variation in tone or texture, while modern singers use a wider range of tone colors and textures to express different emotions and moods. Pop singing typically emphasizes a brighter and more nasal sound. Sometimes, they may use more nasal or progressive sounds in their voice to create a more commercial sound. With the appearance of various instruments and electrical devices, singers began to add a great number of elements to their songs, making them more natural, soft, and rhythmic. Furthermore, pop singers may use breathy or husky tones to create an intimate or vulnerable feeling, or they may use more powerful tones to express strength. Lastly, the applied fields differ for bel canto and pop. Bel canto is usually used in formal occasions, such as classical music, opera, chorus, and concerts. Since bel canto requires clear, pure, balanced voices with good timbre and intonation, this singing method is more suitable for formal performances. The mastery of bel canto requires long-term extensive professional training, and the coordination of various vocal elements. On the other hand, pop singing finds its place in pop music, rock music, and other contemporary genres. Popular singing pays more attention to expressing personal style and emotional delivery, usually showing unique timbre and sense of rhythm. Whereas it offers more creative freedom, pop singing also demands certain vocal skills and expressiveness, including managing different vocal ranges, mastering rhythm and breath, etc. In conclusion, singing is a versatile form of expression that manifests in various styles and contexts. As a chorus member, I prefer bel canto more due to its beautiful rhythm and tones which allow me to enjoy a sense of solace and relief from life’s conflicts and pressure. Ultimately, both styles have their own merits and can be enjoyed by music lovers everywhere.
Ageing society refers to a population over 65 years old that accounts for 7% of the total population. According to the statistics from World Health Organization (WHO), by 2030, one out of six people in the world will fall into this age group. By 2050, the global population of individuals aged 60 and older will double to 2.1 billion. The data represents an unstoppable trend of an ageing society. In this article, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this vital issue. First and foremost, let’s examine the advantages. Human beings have longer lifespan than before thanks to medical advancements and changes in dietary habits. Some seniors even have already achieved financial self-sufficiency. However, a few industries cannot find suitable workers resulting in a labor shortage. In order to increase the labor force and solve the problems of labor shortage, seniors might re-enter the job market. Dr. Ko, Wen-Je, one of the candidates for the presidential election of Taiwan, said that we should not only promote a policy of encouraging the elders to work but also foster industrial transformation so that the elderly can do jobs with lower burdens, such as allowing supermarket employees to sit while working. Additionally, in Asian culture, Longevity is highly regarded by seniors. They aspire to improve their life quality by pursuing anti-ageing. According to the periodical from Nature, Japanese scientists think that ageing is a disease. Their researchers have expected some experiments on toddlers who were injected with pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, allowing them to potentially extend their lives to 150 years. Such advancements have the potential to revolutionize the way we approach ageing and enhance the well-being of seniors. On the other hand, there are also disadvantages. The elders are likely to place additional social pressures on younger generations and drain social welfare systems. For instance, “Torching the Dusties”, which is an utopian literature written by Atwood, Margaret in 2014 is a comic story about the U.S. government that must spend a great deal of budget to take care of the elders, leading to a rising in the unemployment rate. Furthermore, the deletion of social welfare budget can give rise to conflicts between the younger and the senior. In 2017, in Taiwan, early pension reform faced opposition due to cutting of the benefits of the retirees. Some argued they already had enough, questioning relative deprivation towards seniors. Others noted receiving higher pensions than employed young individuals may raise concerns about the seniors’ benefits. To sum up, the trend of an ageing society brings both advantages and disadvantages. From my perspective, I strongly believe that an ageing society brings more benefits than drawbacks. When our senior citizens live longer and prioritize their health, it creates opportunities for active participation in the workforce, driving economic growth and stability. For instance, my grandparents are enjoying doing laborious and philanthropic activities after retirement. They apply for the volunteer in Yan-Ming San National Park and provide labor to repair park trails. They are eager to make our environment gorgeous because this action can generate happiness for the tourists who travel in the mountain and also stimulate all citizens to take responsibility for the eco-friendly systems. This is a crucial example for old people returning to the workplace. Ultimately, by encouraging older adults to remain engaged in the job market, we not only tackle labor shortages but also foster understanding and cooperation among different generations.
